BFA in Art and Design
Combine your love for art and graphic design into a high-level degree
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design is for creative people interested in exploring their expressive voice and preparing themselves for a career in the professional creative world. This major brings together our two most popular degrees in art and graphic design. The BFA in Art and Design is for students who are having a tough time deciding between their love for expressing themselves with art and their desire to help others solve complex communication problems with graphic design.
Why Earn your BFA in Art and Design?
Ðǿմ«Ã½'s Art and Design program combines studio work with real-world projects that will give students options to explore different avenues of creative study. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, which has a more concentrated focus on the student's artwork is the highest undergraduate degree possible in art or design. In addition, the Art and Design major offered through the BFA degree at Saint Xavier is the only one that combines art and graphic design in the Chicagoland area.

About the Program
At Ðǿմ«Ã½, we believe that the best artists are good designers and the best designers are good artists. For that reason, we have created a degree that brings the two together on equal footing. In many ways, the tools for both are similar; it is the objective that is different. The artist is exploring creative self-expression while the designer is pursuing creative problem-solving. When Ðǿմ«Ã½ students mix these two important skills, we get creative solutions that truly represent the voice of a creative professional.
Our world is evolving fast and needs artists and designers capable of harnessing the incredible capacity of our human brains for imagination, invention and creative production. Combining this BFA with a strong, mission-focused foundation in general education, we seek to create responsible and ethical creative professionals capable of expressing themselves and willing to use their creativity to help communicate sophisticated messages and solve complex problems.
Ðǿմ«Ã½ Art and Design is housed in the Visual Arts Center (VAC), a multi-studio facility a few blocks away from campus. This creative clubhouse is packed with tools, materials, supplies and collaborators. Art and design work of many types adorn the walls, and creative people are moving in and out of the studios from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and all weekend long.
The Ðǿմ«Ã½ VAC has studios for motion graphics, graphic design, drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, woodworking, sewing, video and more.
The computers in the building provide free access to all Adobe and Apple software
as well as Maya and Unreal Engine. The art and design library includes books, game
systems, iPads, cameras, lights and tripods available for checkout.
Art and design students travel all over the city to see art, make art, and to visit studios. They spend time in Chicago's many galleries and museums learning what goes into a professional exhibit before sharing their own work in local exhibits on campus and at the Beverly Arts Center. They travel to locations to shoot photography and video projects and to interact with professionals in those fields. Students also visit production and printing studios where professional designers are building real-world projects. Students have the option to do internships and to work side-by-side with professionals. Students cap off their academic experience with a year-long project of their own design that culminates in a gallery exhibit.
