B.A. in New Media Production

Creative Production at the Intersection of Image, Sound and Story

The Bachelor of Arts in New Media Production is for creators who want to push buttons, turn knobs, build worlds and merge media. Students work hands-on with emerging tools inside a state-of-the-art production studio, exploring virtual and extended reality environments, electronic music production, podcasting, video and motion graphics. This program is for students who don't want to choose between art, music or communication -- they want to combine them. Graduates leave with the technical skill, creative confidence and professional experience to produce compelling media across platforms.

Why Earn your B.A. in New Media Production?

In the New Media Production program, you'll work with professional-grade audio and video equipment and a wide array of emerging technologies -- not just the tools shaping media today, but the ones redefining it tomorrow. Inside our state-of-the-art production studio, you'll collaborate on real projects, experiment across disciplines, and build a portfolio that reflects both technical skill and creative vision. While online tutorials can teach individual tools, this degree teaches you how to integrate them -- combining image, sound and story into compelling media experiences.

Graduates are prepared for careers in film and video production, content creation, podcasting, electronic music, immersive media, digital marketing and broadcast media. More importantly, they leave with the skills to evolve with rapidly changing technologies. Instead of mastering just one media, students develop the creative and technical skills to move confidently across many.

About the Program

The B.A. in New Media Production is intentionally interdisciplinary, bringing together courses in art, music and communication to ensure students develop both creative range and technical depth. Students begin with foundational coursework in new media production, computer graphics, video and music theory, building core skills in visual composition, audio production and digital storytelling. As they progress, they move into advanced courses in digital audio production, video production, music production techniques and mediated message design, applying what they learn through hands-on studio projects.

Electives allow students to explore specialized areas such as virtual and extended reality, game design, podcasting, motion graphics, digital imagery, electronic journalism and music business. Throughout the program, students work inside a collaborative production studio environment that mirrors professional creative workflows. Annual portfolio reviews and a senior capstone experience ensure that graduates leave with a focused body of work that reflects both technical proficiency and conceptual development.

Experienced faculty working across art, media production, music technology and communication provide instruction. Many bring professional experience in filmmaking, design, audio engineering, digital media production and media studies, connecting classroom learning directly to industry practice.

New Media Production students work across two dynamic creative spaces at Saint Xavier University: the Visual Arts Center (VAC) and the Campus Media Center.

The Visual Arts Center, located just blocks from campus, serves as a collaborative creative hub where students in art, design and media are actively producing work throughout the day and into the evening. Studios for motion graphics, graphic design, photography, drawing, painting, woodworking and video create an environment where disciplines overlap and ideas move freely. The VAC provides access to Adobe and Apple software, Maya, Unreal Engine and other industry-standard tools, along with cameras, lights, tripods and mobile production equipment available for checkout.
